Week of August 25-29

Hello families!

It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces at Chik Fil A last week. Thank you for coming out to support our school! We look forward to seeing you at Coyote Hills Night on Weds. Aug. 27th, from 6-8 pm. We will be hosting two different information sessions (6:00-6:45 and 7:15-8:00), so that families with more than once child may attend their respective grade level presentations. We will be presenting as a team in Mrs. Ruter's second grade classroom in room 33 (across from the k-1 pod doors). In between sessions, Mrs. Tolbert and the PTCO will be presenting in the gym. Hope to see you there!

This week we will focus on ....

Math: In both 2nd and 3rd grade math, we are all working through unit 1. For both math classes, this unit is a review unit, designed to warm students up for the year. All classes will be starting regular math fact testing. Math facts tests are given weekly. Students are given 2 minutes and 15 seconds to complete their facts, and all students will be given a practice sheet to help them prepare at home. Please check with your respective teacher for the testing days!

FAST (phonics):  We are continuing concept 1 (closed syllables) this week. We will follow up this concept by beginning FAST spelling Lesson 1 this week, with our first spelling test on Friday, August 29th. You may find the spelling words on the sidebar of this page, or in your child's Spelling notebook, that they should be bringing home this week! Spelling homework is just practice, as none will be collected, but we encourage you to try some of the many suggested activities! Please remember that although the lists start off with very easy words, they quickly become much more difficult!

Wordly Wise: Wordly Wise is a vocabulary curriculum. We will be finishing up Unit 1, which focuses on the words calf, claw, couple, cushion, flap, groom, share, shelter, yard, and zero. If you'd like t practice the words with your child, please check the Wordly Wise 3000 link on the sidebar.

Reading: The next 2 weeks will be focused on Monitoring Comprehension with a focus this week on Non-Fiction text features.

Writing: We will begin a narrative writing unit this week, in which we model writing to a prompt "Tell about a fun time you had in your community."

Social Studies:  We will complete Unit 2, "What is a community?", in preparation for Unit 2, which goes into greater depth with types of communities (rural, urban, suburban).

HELLO FAMILIES!!

We have 1.5 days left of school!  Welcome to our last week of school!  We will dismiss students for summer vacation on Tuesday, June 10th at noon.

Let us begin by thanking each and every one one of you for helping make this year a tremendous year of growth, excitement, happiness, and maturity.  We have loved spending time with your children and learning about each and every one of them.  Thank you for taking the time to create a relationship with us to best support your child.

We look forward to seeing you next year!  We encourage you all to stay in touch and please let us know if there is anything we can do for you and your child.  We will always be advocates and friends when and if you need us!

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW:

  • REPORT CARDS WILL GO HOME IN FRIDAY FOLDERS on TUESDAY, JUNE 10th.  (If your child is not here on the last day of school, your child's report card will be mailed - unless we've communicated otherwise.)
  • Inside Report Cards is a copy of your child's MAP scores and reading level (lexile level).  I have highlighted your child's reading level.  Please remember that this is one piece of a body of evidence determined by one test in May.  We look at many factors when determining a child's overall reading proficiency.
  • Inside Report Cards are a few sheets recommending summer reading and math activities, as well as the lexile website where you can find books at your child's reading level.
  • Reading Binders and remaining workbooks and spirals will go home this week.  Inside your child's reading binder, is his or her goals' sheet, fluency graphs, and spelling graphs.  Please look in the goals' section for beginning to end of the year progress  and growth for your child in reading.
  • TUTOR------  Michelle Neuder, our 2nd grade support teacher and next year's 2nd grade classroom teacher, is available for tutoring.  If you are interested, please let me know, and I will be happy to forward your information on to her.  PTCO is also gathering tutoring information for parents, so stay tuned for that as well.
