Week of December 15-19

Dear Parents,

Wow! The last week before winter break has arrived! Soon it will be 2015 and your children will be almost half way through 2nd grade. Time is flying! We want to say thank you to all the families for all you do to support the school, teachers, and of course students. We appreciate all you do. This week we are wrapping up some units and doing some fun activities. We will be having the PACK assembly at 1:30 in the gym with our winter parties following on Friday, the 19th at 2:30 to 3:30.

This week we will focus on..

F.A.S.T (Phonics)- We will begin concept 14. We will be looking at the best spelling for long a. Here are the spellings: a= in open syllable, a-e and ai = the middle of the word, ay= end of a word.

Math: In 2nd grade math, we are working on unit 6, Whole-Nuber Operations and Number Stories. 3rd grade math is working on unit 5.

Reading: We are stilling working around asking questions as we read. Our focus is around asking questions that we think the author will answer. WE WILL NOT HAVE READING CONFERENCES THIS WEEK.

Wordly Wise: We will not have wordly wise this week.

Writing: Students will be typing out their work on "If you were stuck in a snow globe, how could you get out?".

Social Studies: We are continuing on the unit "How do People Become a Part of Our County?".

FOSS: FOSS teachers will continue to teach the current unit.

Week of December 8-12

Dear Parents,

We cannot believe it is already the second week of December! Time is flying by even if it is still 60 degrees out.  It was great seeing second grade families out and about last week at Barnes and Noble and Cold Stone. We are so thankful for your support and all you do for the school! This Friday we have the Snow Flake Dance at 6 to 8 at Fox Ridge.

This week we will focus on...

F.A.S.T (Phonics)- We will begin concept 13 where we talk about "the walkers". These are vowel teams that "when two vowels go walking, the first does the talking". They say the long sound of the first vowel.

Math: In 2nd grade math, we are ending our work in Geometry. We will be reviewing Tuesday and testing on Friday. 3rd grade math is working on Unit 5.

Reading: We are continuing to ask questions as we read. We are working on not only asking questions but finding the answers to those questions in the book. We learn that some questions we ask might not be answered by the book we are reading and that is alright! If we are able to ask questions and find answers to them, it helps up keep track of whether we are paying attention while we read. Reading homework will be around asking questions in either nonfiction or fiction texts.

Wordly Wise: We are continuing work on lesson 7 words. We will be testing this Friday. For extra support, check out http://wordlywise3000.com

Writing: The imaginary piece this week is "If you were stuck in a snow globe, how could you get out?".  This is a very fun prompt and students will get to type there work on the computer!

Social Studies: We are starting the unit "How do People Become a Part of Our County?".

FOSS: FOSS teachers will continue to teach the current unit.

Week of December 1-5

Dear Parents,

We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! It is always great to have special time to be around family and friends. And before you know it we will be at winter break. We hope to see you all at Barnes and Noble and/or Cold Stone Tuesday evening. Both events start at 4. There will be some of us reading our favorite books at Barnes and Noble during the book fair while others are scooping ice cream. Also, Chik-fil-A fundraiser is Tuesday and Wednesday of this week :) We always love seeing all of you outside the school setting.

This week we will focus on...

F.A.S.T (Phonics)- We will begin concept 12, diphthongs. In this concept, the students will learn the sounds for au, aw, oo, ou, ow, oi, oy. For the sound /aw/, we use the spelling au when the sound is at the beginning or middle of the word but when it is at the end of the word, we use the spelling aw. The spelling oo makes two sounds. The first is the sound you might make if you got punched in the stomach with a ball. The second is a sound you might make when you see a cool car. The spelling ow and ou make the sound /ow/, like if you got pinched. You use the ou spelling at the beginning or middle of the word and the ow at the end of the word. Lastly is the sound /oy/, spelled oi at the beginning or middle of the word and oy at the end of the word.

Math: In 2nd grade math, we are continuing our work in Geometry. 3rd grade math will be reviewing and testing on Unit 4.

Wordly Wise: We are starting our first week on lesson 7 words. For extra support, check out http://wordlywise3000.com

Writing: We are writing an imaginary piece about "What would it be like to live in a place that was 20 degrees below zero?". This prompt is based around the book "Recess at 20 Below" which we are reading this week.

Social Studies: We are continuing our unit on "How communities are diverse".

FOSS: FOSS teachers will continue to teach the current unit.

Week of November 24-28

Dear Parents,

We hope you enjoyed your weekend! We are glad that the Broncos squeaked out the victory against the Dolphins- it makes our weekends a bit more enjoyable!  We have already arrived at Thanksgiving week! Please know that we are incredibly thankful for the Coyote Hills community, you, and your children.  We have much to be thankful for in this season!  We have a short two day week, and then plenty of time to relax over the extra long weekend! We hope for safe travels for any of you who will be visiting friends or family out of town.

This week we will focus on...

F.A.S.T. (Phonics)- We will use the two days to review our concepts from the last two weeks- long e and r family.  There will be no spelling this week.

FOSS: FOSS teachers will continue to teach the current unit.

Week of November 17-21

Dear Parents,

We hope that you survived the frigid temperatures this week! It was great to meet with so many of you for conferences throughout week. It is always fun to be able to tell you all of the great things that your kids are doing!  Thank you for all of the support you give your child as well as us teachers, we really appreciate it.  We hope that your child enjoyed their day off on Friday!  It is hard to believe that we have this week and then it is Thanksgiving week already!

This week we will focus on...

F.A.S.T.(Phonics)- We will begin concept 11, the R family.  In this concept, students will learn that er, ir, ur, ar, and or  all belong in the same family and say the /er/ sound.  However, ar and or are rowdy teenagers who like to do their own thing most the time.  ar says /ar/ as in "car," and or says /or/ as in "for."  Students should study spelling list 11 for this week.

Math: In 2nd grade math, we will wrap up Unit 4 with the test on Wednesday.  We will begin Unit 5 on Thursday and participate in "rich math tasks" on Friday.  3rd grade will continue Unit 4, learning about multiplication and division.  **Please continue to practice the STANDout math facts with your child.  They are given 2 minutes and 15 seconds to complete the fact sheet.**

Reading:
In class, we will learn about viewing and reading to learn and wonder.  In these lessons, students will learn to use text and images to understand the story, think and wonder about new learning, realize that misconceptions are normal, and that all learners revise their thinking after reading and listening to additional information.

For reading homework, we will continue working on mastering basic story elements.

Wordly Wise: We will introduce and do activities with the words from lesson 6.  For extra support, check out http://wordlywise3000.com.

Writing: We will continue to work on expository writing (writing to explain why).  The students this week will write to the prompt, "What is your favorite family tradition? Explain why it is your favorite."

Social Studies: We will wrap up our unit on "How communities change," this week with a test on Wednesday.  We will move onto a unit discovering "How communities are diverse."

FOSS: FOSS teachers will continue to teach their current units to our classes.

Week of November 10th - 14th

Dear Parents,

Last week flew by and it feels great to be back in the swing of things. We will celebrate our veterans this week, with an assembly as well as having guest speakers in our classroom on Tuesday.  This week we have parent teacher conferences, and we are looking forward to seeing you and talking about your wonderful children! Due to conferences, please remember that we will not have school on Friday, November 14th.

This week we will focus on....

F.A.S.T (Phonics)- We will begin concept 10, which covers the Long E sound.  We will discuss that the long e sound can be made using ee, ea, y, e, and e_e.  Students will learn that in one syllable words, ee and ea are the best, and in multisyllable words, e, ee, ea, e_e, and y are the best.   Students should study Spelling list 10 throughout the week.

Math: In 2nd grade math, we will continue our work in Unit 4, which focuses on addition strategies, diagrams, temperature, and number stories.  Homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday.  3rd grade math will continue in Unit 4 as well, focusing on multiplication and division.  ** Please continue to test your children for 2 minutes and 15 seconds on their STANDOUT math facts each night.**

Reading:
In class, we will continue reading nonfiction books, discussing our background knowledge on different topics, and reading to find new information.  Our goal is to help students understand what "background knowledge" is, and how it helps us understand the text better.  We are also working on gaining new knowledge to "file" in our brains.

For homework, we are working on different story elements as well as retells.

Wordly Wise: We will continue studying and working in Lesson 5 this week with a test on Thursday.  Words for this week are: absorb, anchor, brush, bud, center, core, factory, hive, sapling, and trunk.  Check out http://wordlywise3000.com/ for additional support.

Writing: This week, we will be diving into expository(explanatory) writing. Students will be writing about their favorite time of the year, and explaining why it is their favorite.

Week of October 20th- October 31st

 Hello Families-

Once again as a second grade team we want to thank you all for your support with our spirit Friday (aka Mustache Day),  our all school food drive, and our wonderful Fall parties.  Your support is truly amazing and appreciated!  We wish everyone safe travels and hope that you find time to relax and recharge with your families.

Over break be on the look out for a sign up genius from your teacher in regards to Fall Parent Conferences.  These will be held the week of November 10th.

This week we will focus on ....

Math: In second grade math, we will begin working on Unit 4. The coming week's lessons will discuss change to more than one digit, parts and total, number stories and temperature.  Typically your child will have homework Monday through Thursday.  We will be working on higher level thinking activities on Fridays, and will not assign homework over the weekend.  For 3rd grade math students, they are finishing their work in Unit 3 focusing on perimeter, area, diameter, circumference and number models that help with these concepts. Then will start Unit 4 which focuses on multiplication and division.
*Please continue to time your child 2 minutes and 15 seconds with their math facts.

FAST (phonics):  We will continue working on concept 9 ("Changing Rule") the week we return. We will discuss how vowel tag does not always work so we need to change the vowels sound.  For example, if you try to use vowel tag for "hotel" you would have "hot-" "-el." So the vowel "lets go of the tag and you have "ho-" "-tel." We will be studying list 9 of our spelling words.

Reading:
In Class: We will be working on merging thinking with new learning.  Our goal is to help the students listen to the voice in their head that signals new learning, understand the term "background knowledge," and react to new information they come across during reading.

For Homework: Your child will be asked to focus on the key pieces of doing a fiction retell.

Wordly Wise: We will introduce and begin to work from Lesson 5 this week.  The words we are focusing on this week are: absorb, anchor, brush, bud, center, core, factory, hive, sapling, trunk.  Check out the wordlywise3000 website for addition support.

Writing: We will start instructing on explanatory writing.  Using similar formatting as we did for planning narrative pieces, we will have students explain why we should be thankful for veterans.

Social Studies: We will be moving into "How do communities change?" This addresses how a community changes as the needs of each community grow and change.

FOSS:  FOSS science is in full swing.  Your child will get to experience FOSS in their classrooms on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45pm-3:25pm.

Upcoming dates to know:

 Hello Families-

Thank you, thank you for all of your support these past few weeks with our spirit Fridays, Ride/Walk your bike to School Day, last nights bingo night and now our all school food drive.  Your support is truly amazing and appreciated!  We are down to only five more days until Fall Break.

Did I mention they will be jam packed days full of fun but also hard work as we wrap up our data collection. Soon your teacher will be sending out a sign up for Fall Parent Conferences.  These are not held until the second week after Fall break.

By now you should have heard from your classroom teacher about when your child's fall party will be along with any needs to support these fun events.  We all look forward to seeing you then.

Friday, October 17th is also a PTCO Friday Fun Day, bring in $1 and wear a fun mustache that gives some of our specials teachers a run for their money!

This week we will focus on ....

Math: In second grade math, we will be continuing unit 3. This week's lessons will discuss making change by counting up, coin exchanges, and frames and arrows with multiple rules.  Typically your child will have homework Monday through Thursday.  We will be working on higher level thinking activities on Fridays, and will not assign homework over the weekend.  For 3rd grade math students, they are continuing their work in unit 3 focusing on perimeter, area, diameter, circumference and number models that help with these concepts.
*Please continue to time your child 2 minutes and 15 seconds with their math facts.

FAST (phonics):  We are working on concept 9 (Silent Magnetic -e) this week. We will discuss how an -e at the end of the word can change a vowel to make it say its long sound but you never hear a sound from the -e.  For example, the word "kit" turns to "kite" by adding the silent -e.  If your child ever forgets their spelling spiral, please check out the spelling tab on the blog.  We will be studying list 8 of our spelling words.

Reading:
In Class: We will be working on making meaningful connections to texts.  Our goal is to help the students understand that their own personal experiences are important to understanding what they read and learn.  Keep working on how their connections help them understand the text better.  (This could be because they understand how the characters are feeling.)

For Homework: Your child will be asked to build "T-charts" that demonstrate what their connection is and how the connection helps them better understand their personal text.

Wordly Wise: We will introduce and begin to work from Lesson 5 this week.  The words we are focusing on this week are: absorb, anchor, brush, bud, center, core, factory, hive, sapling, trunk.  Check out the wordlywise3000 website for addition support.

Writing: We are continuing to work on Personal Chronological Narrative.  This week your child's classroom teacher will choose to do a new prompt or mini lessons focused on their individual class' needs.  We are writing into our focused modeled writing notebooks. There is an opening sentence, three sentences for details, three sentences for extended details and a closing sentence.  We are modeling so many wonderful writing strategies within our lessons based on our rubrics and the student's needs.

Social Studies: We will be continuing Unit 8 "How Can I be a Good Shopper?" This addresses the financial literacy standard for second grade. As classes we will discuss needs vs. wants.

Friday, October 10th is also a PTCO Friday Fun Day, bring in $1 and wear your best mismatched outfit!
This week we will focus on ....

Math: In second grade math, we will be continuing unit 3. This week's lessons will discuss using coins to buy things, telling time and looking at data.  Typically your child will have homework Monday through Thursday.  We will be working on higher level thinking activities on Fridays, and will not assign homework over the weekend.  For 3rd grade math students, they are continuing their work in unit 3 focusing on linear measurement, perimeter and area.
*Please continue to time your child 2 minutes and 15 seconds with their math facts.

FAST (phonics):  We are working on concept 7 (Complex Fronts) this week. We will discuss that many words start with two consonants.  These are complex because there are more sounds to segment for spelling.  As good readers and writers we will segment for spelling and blend (stretch the sounds together like pulling on a rubber band or bubble gum) for reading.  If your child ever forgets their spelling spiral, please check out the spelling tab on the blog.

In all and walk, the letter a has a short o sound.  In bank, the vowel has a long a sound. In sing, the vowel has a long e sound.  If your child ever forgets their spelling spiral, please check out the spelling tab on the blog.

Reading:
In Class: We will be thinking about what we know and writing teaching books.  Our goals for the students are that they understand the term accuracy, and apply it to their teaching book writing.  That they write teaching books on topics that they know and care about.  Lastly, that they include non-fiction visual and text features as well as written text in their teaching books.

For Homework: Your child will be continuing to work on non-fiction texts, and if they are ready to move on from the non-fiction text feature chart, they will receive other formats to practice their  thinking while reading non-fiction.

*Please continue to time your child 2 minutes and 15 seconds with their math facts.

FAST (phonics):  We are working on concept 5 (Vowel Suffix Power) this week. Vowel Suffixes are suffixes which begin with a vowel.  Vowel Suffixes are bullies, which jump over the consonant, and make the vowel say it's own name. In order to protect the short vowel sound, we double the final consonant.  If your child ever forgets their spelling spiral, please check out the spelling tab on the blog.

Reading:
In Class: We will be working on lessons that help readers discover their passion and become specialists while reading.  We want students to learn that non-fiction reading, is reading to learn, and non-fiction writing is writing to teach.  We want the students to know what a specialist is, and what it means to have passion.  We want them to recognize they come to school with information, and they are specialists in something.  Lastly, we want them to create a list of specialist topics that they know a lot about, care about, and could teach someone about.

For Homework: Your child will be continuing to work on the strategy: Non-fiction text features.  The students will be reading Non-Fiction Texts, and will be looking for and recording the different text features within their books, as well as where they found them, and how the feature helps them understand the story.   Your child will have a sheet to fill out inside their reading pouch.     .
