Week of December 16


Dear Families-

We are down to our last week of school in this 2013 year.  We have enjoyed every minute with your 2nd grade child and wish for nothing but further growth and joy with each and every child in the 2014 year!

Here's this week's lessons at a glance:

This week, you can expect:  
   
MATH:  For 2nd grade math-We are working on Unit 6 learning about addition and subtraction operations and will begin to look at multiplication and division concepts with visual, represenational, and abstract instruction.  In 3rd grade math- We are working on Unit 5 Place Value in whole numbers and decimals.  Stand Out Math Computation tests given every week and Stand Out Math taught on Friday.

WRITING:  We are working on Narrative Writing. Our prompt last week was..."Tell about a time you were stuck in a snow globe!"  We will be finishing the writing prompt as well as our snow globe visual this week.  We can't wait for you to see them on display in our 2nd grade hallway!

PHONICS AND  VOCABULARY: 

Continuing to practice our FAST phonics.  Fast spelling test (lesson 14) will be on Friday, check out the spelling tab for the current list. 

Lesson 7 in Wordly Wise will start this week.  We will review and test the Friday we return from Winter Break.  

LITERACY:  Continuing whole group reading and responding, as well as small group conferences around individual reading levels.  We are currently working on using information from illustrations to demonstrate an understanding of setting.  We will also begin to recount stories about the holiday season using different cultural perspectives and points of view.  We will be reading books about the Hispanic, Japanese, Puetro Rican, Russian, and American cultures to name a few.  If your family has a holiday book you would like to suggest for our read alouds, please contact your teacher.

Week of December 9th


Dear Families-

Thank you for supporting our community and school last week during Barnes and Noble and Cold Stone night!  We very much appreciate your time and fundraising enthusiasm on such a cold night.  Here's this week's lessons at a glance:

This week, you can expect:  
   
MATH:  For 2nd grade math-We are working on Unit 5 Geometry.  Our test will be on Wednesday, December 11.   In 3rd grade math- We are working on Unit 5 Place Value in whole numbers and decimals.  Stand Out Math Computation tests given every week and Stand Out Math taught on Friday.

WRITING:  We are working on Narrative Writing. Our prompt this week will be on the imaginative side..."Tell about a time you were stuck in a snow globe!"  We hope to engage and inspire our winter writers with this creative prompt!

PHONICS AND  VOCABULARY: 

Continuing to practice our FAST phonics.  Fast spelling test (lesson 13) will be on Friday, check out the spelling tab for the current list. 

Lesson 6 in Wordly Wise will be continued (badge, banner, corner, design, display, fold, parade, rectangle, salute, and tread )  don't forget about the wordly wise 3000 link as an extra resource.  Our Wordly Wise 6 test will be on Friday.

Dear Families-
Thank you so much for joining in on the Turkey Trot.  The students sure enjoyed pajama day!  We will be resuming with school on Monday, December 2nd.  Your child will have a reading conference on their regular day.  Friday Folders are coming home on Tuesday.  There will be no school Wednesday 11/27 - Friday 11/29.  Have a wonderful and safe long weekend!

Dear Second Grade Families-

We have had a wonderful and busy week.  There was a lot of excitement in the air with the snow and thoughts of the delicious meals and family time we will be enjoying next week.  We have been enjoying some wonderful classical music in our rooms.

 As a team, we decided not to do reading conferences next week since there are only 2 days.  Your child's reading will be due on the normal conference day the following week. 

We are due for some fun.... Tuesday is going to be a pajama day, and we are going to watch Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Tuesday afternoon. 



Remember the dance is tonight, November 22nd, at Fox Ridge Middle School at 5:30pm.   



Barnes and Noble and Cold Stone Night will be on Wednesday December 4th,  we hope to see you all there! 



Turkey Trot was moved to Monday during your child's recess, please come and join if you would like. 


We are so thankful to have the opportunity to work with your children and your families, and hope you enjoy the family time as there is no school Wednesday-Friday next week. Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello Families!

Thank you for joining us for parent teacher conferences.  It was so nice to touch base with you, and discuss your wonderful children. 
 
Friday, November 13th is a non-contact day for students.
 
We enjoyed a Veteran's Day Assembly last Friday, and had the opportunity to have Veteran's speak in our classrooms on Monday.  The students wrote a card to thank a Veteran for their service as well. 
 
Next week Dr. N is coming to our grade to talk to the students about PACK expectations.
 
Thank you for your wonderful donations to the food drive, which will continue next week!
 
We will be having our annual Turkey Trot on Friday, November 22nd during recess, come out and join us if you can!
 
The School Snowflake Dance will also take place on Friday, November 22nd in the evening.

MATH:  For 2nd grade math-We have been working on ballpark estimation, and partial sums.  Your child will have a unit 4 review on Tuesday, and unit 4 test on Wednesday... so no homework that night.   In 3rd grade math: will continue working on finishing up unit 4.  Stand Out Math Computation tests given every week and Stand Out Math taught on Friday.
 


 WRITING:  We are working on Narrative Writing. Our prompt will be "Tell about a time you were Thankful." Through Focused Modeled Writing, kids will have an opportunity to learn as teachers model, as well as apply their thinking as they create their own thinking maps and writing. Our focus will be on building the structure in writing, while still learning to add details and use descriptive language.

PHONICS AND  VOCABULARY:  Continuing to practice our FAST phonics. Fast spelling test (lesson 11) will be on Friday, check out the spelling tab for the current list.  Lesson 5 in Wordly Wise will be continued (our words are: absorb, anchor, brush, bud, center, core, factory, hive, sapling, trunk )  don't forget about the wordly wise 300 link as an extra resource.

LITERACY:  Continuing whole group reading and responding, as well as small group conferences around individual reading levels.  We are currently working on using information from illustrations to demonstrate an understanding of characters, setting and plot.  We are asking questions like what do the illustrations tell me about the setting, what do the illustrations tell me about how a character is feeling, and what do the illustrations tell me about the plot.

Thursday, November 7th


Hello Families!
The first week back has flown by.  It was so wonderful to hear about the fun trips and relaxing family time over break.  We enjoyed seeing your children, and getting back into the routine.


 
This Friday, November 8th- your child's report card will come home in their Friday Folders.  You will see some N/A's- this marking represents the current status for some of the report card categories not yet introduced in 2nd grade.  It is also used for the FOSS science unit emphasized this trimester in your child's classroom.  While your child has been continuously engrossed in rigorous scientific inquiry. we have not explored all units to completion preventing the determination of a performance rating at this time. 

 
Friday, November 8th- The second graders have been invited to a Veteran's Day Practice Assembly at 2:45pm in the gym.

Monday, November 11th- We will be welcoming Veteran's to join here at Coyote Hills for an assembly at 9:15am in the gym, and some will even speak in our classrooms.  Following the classroom visits, there will be a reception in the library.  We are excited to welcome and honor our Veteran guests. 

All next week we are looking forward to visiting with you to discuss your child's progress and goals during our parent/teacher conferences.  If you have not signed up yet, please contact your classroom teacher as soon as possible.

Hello Families!
Only three more wake ups!  The count down is into the single digits for Fall Break and the kids are feeling it.

 
This Thursday, October 17th will be our PACK Assemblies.  K-2 will meet in the gym at 1:30-2:15.  Intermediate grades 3-5 will follow in the gym from 2:30-3:15.

 
Friday, October 18th from 2:45-3:30 will be all second grade class parties.  We are excited for you to join us! 

 
This week, you can expect:     
MATH:  For 2nd grade math- there was a Unit 3 assessment today.  We will be starting Unit 4 tomorrow.  This unit will focus on number stories, missing addends, and multi step number problems. In 3rd grade math: we will be reviewing Unit 3 for our test on Thursday.  Stand Out Math Computation tests given every week and Stand Out Math taught on Friday.

WRITING:  We are working on Narrative Writing. Our prompt will be "tell about a fun time with a friend." Hello Families!
Hopefully, you have a wonderful weekend. This first few days of October has been full of crazy weather! Fall break will soon be upon us.   

 With all of the festivities during this time of year we would like to give a gentle reminder that we encourage all students to bring healthy snacks.  (Please no cookies, brownies or candy...)  However these are wonderful treats for lunch. 
 
Don't forget Wednesday, October 9th is Walk to School Day!!! We can't wait to see you and will hope for some warmer temperatures!
 
Muffins with Mom is a week from today!  October 11th from 9:00-10:00 in your child's classroom.  We are excited to give you a peek at what your child's mornings at school are like.
 
On October 11th, PTCO has another fun spirit day planned.  The theme will be "Mustache Day." Donations of $1.00 will still be collected by PTCO.

Our "Get Out of Fundraising" donation drive is underway! Instead of selling "stuff" door-to-door as many elementary schools do, we hold a monetary donation drive every year. The recommended amount of $50 per student goes toward funding different programs and technology for the school.  Look for more detailed information coming home in Friday folders.

We will also be having our Friday Fun Days again this year! For a donation of $1 (or more!), your child can participate in fun events every Friday.  Here is what is planned for this year:

Hello Families!
Hopefully, you had a fantastic weekend. We are entering October, can you believe it?! Fall break will soon be upon us. 

BINGO night has been rescheduled to this Friday, October 4 from 6-8 pm at Fox Ridge Middle School.

Tomorrow, PTCO has encouraged a second crazy hat day/crazy hair day in an effort to get all students here for October Count day. Donations of $1.00 will still be collected by PTCO. Friday's spirit day this week is popcorn day- donations of a dollar but popcorn to have in class.

Hello families!

We hope you had a fantastic weekend, and maybe an extra day off with your kids! Teachers were hard at work on Friday, attending trainings and working to align our curriculum with the new Common Core standards.
It's unbelievable that school has been in session for going on 7 weeks! We have had so much fun getting to know these wonderful students. It has been a whirlwind as we have gotten all our curricular pieces and routines in place. Please contact your child's teacher if you have questions about homework or classroom routines/procedures.
