Week of April 28


Dear Second Grade Families,

We are down to 6.5 weeks left of school!  Many exciting events and learning opportunities will take place the last few weeks.  We will keep you posted as things come to a conclusion and we prepare your child for summer and 3rd grade!

**We will not have a math lesson on Tuesday and Wednesday due to our music dress rehearsals with Mr. Cribari held from 9:00-10:30.

**Please pay attention to our grade level news for this week, highlighted in yellow.

This week we will focus on ....

Math: In Second Grade math, we will begin fraction foundational work, such as:  parts of a whole, halves, thirds, and quarters.
            In Third grade math, we will focus on Unit 9, involving multiplication and division of 10s, 100s, and 1000s.  

           Continue to practice math facts for fluency.  We want all students to be proficient in addition and subtractions facts by the end of second grade.

FAST:  We are testing this THURSDAY on Lesson 27 spelling words.

Wordly Wise: We will be testing Lesson 13 this Friday, April 25.

Reading: The next 2 weeks will be focused on Inferring and Visualizing using Nonfiction material and defining and analyzing text features.  

Students will be begin to revisit writing retells/summaries in order to prepare for our end-of-year benchmarks and standard expectations before leaving 2nd grade.  

Writing: 

Social Studies:  Unit 6 is continuing with... "How are goods made and brought to us?"

FOSS:  We will have our science lesson on Monday only this week due to our Music Performance on Thursday at 2:30pm.

Grade Level News:
  • The week of April 28th, students will be practicing for the Music Performance with costumes.  Please send in costumes by Monday, April 28th.  
  • Thursday, May 1:  2:30 and 6:30 Music Performances
  • Thursday, May 1:  Field Trip Money Due
  • Friday, May 2:  No School for Students, Work day for teachers
  • Thursday, May 22:  Field trip to the Wildlife Experience 
  • Friday, May 23rd:  Walk a Thon during lunch.
  • Monday, May 26th:  No School, Memorial Day
  • Wednesday, May 28th:  Field Day
  • Friday, May 30:  Evening PTCO Carnival
  • Tuesday, June 10:  LAST DAY OF SCHOOL:  Dismissal at Noon.

The week of April 21st

This week we will focus on ....

Math: In Second Grade math, we are continuing Unit 11, addition and subtraction number stories with dollars and cents, reviewing of two-three digit subtraction strategies, and multiplication and division understanding.   There will be a math test this Friday over Unit 11.
            In Third grade math, we will be focused on Unit 9 work involving multiplication and division of 10s, 100s, and 1000s.  

           Continue to practice math facts for fluency.  We want all students to be proficient in addition and subtractions facts by the end of second grade.

FAST:  We are testing this Friday on Lesson 26 spelling words.

Wordly Wise: We will be testing Lesson 13 this Friday, April 25.

Grade Level News:

  • Tuesday, April 22 is Picture Day and Earth Day.  Send in picture order forms.  Bring in a sack lunch and a towel/blanket as we will be eating lunch and spending a bit of time outside!  It is predicted to be 80 degrees and you may want to put sunscreen on your child.

Welcome back families.  We hope you had a fabulous Spring Break.  We are so excited to start the last 8.5 weeks left of school!  Many exciting events and learning opportunities will take place the last few weeks.  We will keep you posted as things come to a conclusion and we prepare your child for summer and 3rd grade!

This week we will focus on ....

Math: In Second Grade math, we are continuing Unit 11, addition and subtraction number stories with dollars and cents, reviewing of two-three digit subtraction strategies, and multiplication and division understanding. 
            In Third grade math, we will be focused on Unit 9 work involving multiplication and division of 10s, 100s, and 1000s.

FAST:  We are testing this Friday on Lesson 25 spelling words - Long 'i' in the form of a 'y' at the end of a word.

Wordly Wise: We are building our understanding and application of Lesson 13 words over the next 2 weeks.  We will be testing Lesson 13 Friday, April 25.

Reading: The next 3 weeks will be focused on Inferring and Visualizing using Poetry and Nonfiction material.  

Writing: This week we are assessing students on their current progress in expository writing.  

Social Studies:  Unit 6 will be starting this week, "How are goods made and brought to us?"

FOSS:  We will have our science lesson on Thursday only this week due to CMAS (Social Studies State Testing in 4th and 5th grade).
